Diary of January 2009



1 January 2009: Father Gérard takes up office as (newly appointed) Diocesan Caritas Director and as (re-appointed) HIV/AIDS Coordinator of the Diocese of Eshowe.


2 January 2009: Mrs. Cynthia McQue starts her full time employment as Personal Assistant to Father Gérard.


3 January 2009: Dr. Vicco von Arnim, a member of the German Association of the Order of Malta, pays us a visit with his family.


3 January 2009: Chapter General of the Bendictine Sisters of Twasana at Inkamana Abbey: Our member Sr. Theodora Ntuli O.S.B. is re-elected as Mother General of the Community.


13 January 2009: Patients of Blessed Gérard's Hospice "take possession" of wheelchairs which have been donated to us by Romex:

In December 2008, Dr Henk Kayser from Romex, agreed to donate 4 brand new adult size wheelchairs to Blessed Gérard's Hospice.  These wheelchairs were collected in December in East London, and delivered on site in January 2009.

Romex-Rotary Medical Equipment Exchange is a Rotary project of District 9320, South Africa, organized and managed by the Rotary Club of Arcadia, East London.
Over the past eight years, Romex has developed an international; network of Rotarians in the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany who are able to assist with the collection and shipping of quality surplus medical equipment from First World countries to South Africa.


15 January 2009: The Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard is listed at betterplace.org: http://de.betterplace.org/organisations/bbg. 15 January 2009: Dedicated Members' Meeting of the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard.

17 January 2009: A first Support Group - calling themselves "Buhlebempilo Group" - of AIDS Patients who are being treated by Blessed Gérard's Hospice HAART Programme is established and started with 12 people attending.


19 January 2009: Waiting outside the Children's Court: The Magistrate placed another three of the children of Blessed Gérard's Children's Home officially into our care: Miriam, Siya and Noxolo.


20 January 2009: Mr. Victor Himunchul, the Project-Coordinator of Blessed Gérard's Children's Home was appointed a member of the Management Committee of Blessed Gérard's Care Centre and the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard by the Board of Directors.


21 January 2009: "First day at school" and "Back to school" for the children of Blessed Gérard's Children's Home.


22 January 2009: Tony Wende and a TV crew from Public Broadcasting System Network (PBS) Canada came to interview Fr.Gérard on the challenges of antiretroviral treatment in Africa. The interview will be broadcast in Canada in the special reports nd features of "World Focus".

23 January 2009: The Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard establishes a group on XING, a social software platform for enabling a small-world network for professionals.

27 January 2009: A very special day for Blessed Gérard's Children's Home: Since today all our children are finally officially placed into our care by the children's court (Magistrate Pat Naicker of Eshowe): Njabulo, Siyabonga, Jody, Meagen, Hloni and Thuli were placed into our continued care today.

28 January 2009: Our Social Worker Hlengiwe Dube finally receives her registration certificate from the South African Council for Social Service Professions making her a registered Social Worker.

31 January 2009: Our member Sr. Benedicta Nzimande O.S.B. of Twasana Convent celebrates her Silver Jubilee of monastic profession.
