10th anniversary celebrated at Care Centre

"Now the children, who are most dear to our hearts, have an even better place to stay."

So said the President and founder of the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard, Father Gérard Lagleder who also runs the care centre in Mandeni and lives there, at their 10th anniversary celebration on December 15.

"Being Catholic based, for ten years the members of this Brotherhood have lovingly cared for and helped all those who need it most, but there was nowhere for needy and orphaned children to stay and they were housed in the hospice.

"The growing numbers of neglected, abandoned, abused or orphaned children made the need for a children's home obvious and the building of the Blessed Gérard’s Children's Home began earlier this year and is now complete," said Fr. Lagleder.

This colourful fully equipped children's home can house up to 40 children who will be lovingly cared for by dedicated staff.

This care centre, runs mobile home nursing teams, a day care centre, an in-house training facility and a hospice to provide specialised care.

The Rt Rev Bishop of Eshowe, Dr Mansuet Dela Biyase led a solemn Holy Mass, which was part of the anniversary celebration and blessed the hospice and the new children's home.

The Vice-President of the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard and manageress of the Care Centre and Hospice, Clare Kalkwarf, was also honoured at the ceremony for the wonderful work she does for the needy.

His Excellency, the Grand Commander of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Frŕ Ludwig Hoffmann von Rumerstein, who was a special guest of honour at the celebration, congratulated Mrs. Kalkwarf on an excellent job serving the needy in the community.

Clare Kalkwarf was promoted to the rank of  a "Dame of Magistral Grace" of the Order of  Malta.

Invited guests were treated to a feast of food, dancing and singing. All involved were justifiably proud of the fact that the alterations to the hospice and the building of the children's home, which amounted to R4 million, had been paid in full.

Those present that contributed generously to the centre and enabled the brotherhood to complete the building were given framed certificates of thanks.

The Children from Blessed Gérard's Children's Home were special guests of honour at the 10th anniversary celebration of the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard recently. Helpers and residents are all delighted that the renovations to Blessed Gérard's Care Centre and Hospice are also complete.
