VICTOR Claudius, centre, who has collected many honours from a wide variety of organisations, is praised by Rev Father Gérard Lagleder, president of the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard, and Clare Kalkwarf, vice-president of the Brotherhood

Pensioner raises R30 000

DURBAN'S "Mr. Charity", Victor Claudius, has devoted his retirement to raising funds for good causes. And this week, the 69-year-old caring pensioner handed over another R30 000 to one of his favourite charities, the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard, which runs 12 projects including a children's care centre and hospice at Mandeni.

It was his biggest single donation to date.

Claudius has now raised a total of R70 000 for various charities, including a previous doation of R20 000 to the Brotherhood.

He has also supplied them with a long list of much-needed items including beds and matresses, furniture, toys, televisions, a video machine and blankets.

He raises the money "in 101 different ways".

"Sometimes it's very small, but it all adds up," Claudius said.

One big money-spinner was an annual concert featuring the Durban Men's Choir, while the smaller contributions came from raffles, cake sales, collections and selling second-hand books.

"The Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard is a very worthwhile cause and I'm going to keep raising money for it," pledged Claudius, who is also a voluntary police constable at Durban Central Station, where he puts in an eight hour shift in the radio room every Sunday.

And what does the Rev Father Gérard Lagleder, the founder and president of the Brotherhood think of Claudius's efforts?

"His diligence is admirable.

He is a wonderful man and we are very grateful for his donation," he said.

Added the vice-president, Clare Kalkwarf: "Victor works tirelessly to help those less fortunate than himself. He really cares."

Father Gérard said that the charity relied entirely on donations, and Claudius's latest donation represented two weeks' running costs for his 80-bed facility.
